I habe in mein Thema genennt das ich ein Swap hat gemacht und nur zwei Bilder gesehen lassen. Jetzt habe ich fer ganze Report (auf Englisch naturlich) gemacht und alle Bilder hierunter geplatzt. Viel Spass!
Project 1ZZ – 2ZZ
This is a report of my project: 1ZZ – 2ZZ engine swap in my Toyota Celica GT from 2000.
Sunday aug 10, 2008 20:32
Today I bought a total loss GTS from a clubmember from my Celica club, CELICAS.EU, here in Holland. A few weeks ago a went to Meijel in the south of Holland to see if the engine, the tranny and the ECU were OK. We got the engine running and I decided to buy the wreckage.
Pictures of the wrecked GTS:
Me and my dad drove to Meijel today to pick it up. It was hard to get it up on the truck because the wreckage didn’t have wheels anymore. When we got to the garage of my dad we got the wreckage off the truck with a beamclamp, chainhoist and tension belts. Lucky for me that I could borrow everything from the warehouse at the company I work for
The truck.
Here you see the GTS wreckage hanging on the ceiling of the garage when we unloaded it from the truck.
This week I’m going to start taking the damaged and undamaged parts off the celica.

Today I’ve been busy taking off the parts that I can re-use or sell.
This is how the engine bay of the wrecked GTS looked like after a few hours work. Yes, the runners are dented...Major fvck up from first owner. Don't know what he has done that caused these dents.

Me and Michel (works for my father as a Toyota mechanic) towing the 2ZZ engine out.
The 2ZZ engine parked in the corner.
Build bij Yamaha.
We want to finish the swap Sunday the 24th. A very optimistic schedule, but we think we can pull it off.

Haven’t been able to do much this weekend due to other obligations. We pulled out the entire interior.

I’ve been busy making a SS flange for the GTS midpipe so that I can mount the exhaust. The guy I bought the GTS from had the flange removed to mount an aftermarket exhaust (amateurs!)
I hope I’ll be able to fit a SS pipe and the SS flange on Wednesday. All can then be welded on Thursday.
Midpipe GTS without flange:
Close-up of midpipe.
Tonight I checked if the flange I made fitted my GT exhaust.
In this picture you see my GT with on the left my GT midpipe and on the right my GT exhaust. In the middle is my custom made flange.
Now all I need is a piece of SS 2”pipe to fit the flange.

I got me a piece of 2” SS pipe from work and after dinner I drove to my dads garage. I drove the GT on the bridge, unbolted the GT midpipe and bolted the GTS midpipe under the GT. After that I cut the pipe to the correct dimensions, tackwelded the flange and the pipe to the GTS midpipe and this is the result. As you can see the gap is huge! I think I made some miscalculations……WTF!
After a lot of tackwelding, fitting and grinding is this the result. Finally I can go home!
I’m satisfied with the result. After all is this a temporary solution.

I’ve had the pipe and flange fully welded to the GTS midpipe at my work.

The start of a long weekend. Tonight we want to tow the 1ZZ engine out of my GT.
Started removing all the covers and the air filter housing. Removed the battery, the airconditioning fluid, cooling fluid, radiator and airconditioning pump.
Removed the hood, bumper and axis.
The 1ZZ engine ready to be towed out of the GT.
And at the end of the night my GT stands next to the GTS both without engine.
Tomorrow we’re going to clean the engine bay, wax it and replace all the rusty bolts with new ones. After that we want to put in the 2ZZ engine in my GT! We are on schedule!

Started today with cleaning and polishing the engine bay. Used a black and blue (8M6) spraycan to remove little damages and rust spots while the access is still easy.
This is how the engine bay of the GT looked like at the end of the morning.
Now the 2ZZ engine can be lowered in the GT engine bay and the engine mounts can be bolted.
I checked out if I could use the 1ZZ wiring harness or if I needed to swap that too. Turned out that the wiring for the LIFT was already foreseen in the 1ZZ wiring harness.
I did not expect this because I read on newcelica.org that you need to add three wires for the LIFT.
Here are a few pics of the installation of the 2ZZ engine in my GT.
Put back the axis, sprayed a bit of alu finish on the radiator and installed it.
This is how it looked at the end of Saturday. Very clean if I may say so!
Still on schedule! Hopefully we can start the engine tomorrow.:wiggle:
Sunday aug 24, 2008 18:11
We started around 11:00 to pour in the fluids and do some other small stuff.
Checked the engine milage of the 1ZZ engine: 138908 km
Mounted the air filter (temporary one), battery, and ECU:
Around 13:30 we were ready to start the engine. An exciting moment!
Turned the key and the engine started!
Now all we had to do is to let the engine run and see if the fans get activated and cooling fluid would circulate when the engine would reach a certain temperature.
The fans got activated, but no cooling fluid would circulate. The cause was air in the system. We turned off the engine so that the fluid could press out the air over night. No test drive today.
We installed the strutbar, the bumper and the covers:
Mounted the hood back:
We left the car on the bridge so that the fluid could press out the air over night.

O Yeah! Driving 2ZZ!
Testdrive was great! Ik was behind the wheel while our mechanic checked the engine via an OBDII reader. Everything was OK. LIFT FTW!
I haven’t build in the airconditioning either. Saves weight and gives a little more power.
After the testdrive we drove back the Celica to the garage to do a check-up.
We had some leakage of tranny oil coming rom the axis. Possibly the washer. We ordered a new one which we will replace Friday.
This was such an easy swap! Picked up the wreckage the 10th of august and two weeks later I have a 2ZZ in my Celica GT!

Tonight we replaced the washer.
We took out the damaged washer.
Replaced it with a new one and installed the axis back.
A nice picture from the tranny and engine.
Sanded the pulley and spray painted it black.

Picked up a Blitz air filter to replace the cheap ugly filter.
This is the end result of my 1ZZ - 2ZZ swap!:
